This resource published by NHS England aims to support NHS commissioners in setting a level of ambition on reducing potential years of life lost (PYLL) from causes amenable to healthcare.
Commissioners can use the resource to assist with the strategic planning process and to provide advice on the comparative benefits, and costs where known, of implementing a range of clinical interventions.
The resource, which has been produced through partnership working between the Commissioning Assembly, NHS Improving Quality, NHS England and Public Health England, will continue to be developed in 2014. It brings together analytical information on potential impact, clinical evidence base and signposting to recent resources and case studies provided by Area Teams, local networks and partner organisations.
The resource focuses on interventions which deliver benefits in terms of reduced potential years of life lost and, while the interventions set out in it are expected to be cost-effective, they are not necessarily cost-saving. It includes relevant information about prevention, but has a broader focus on reducing mortality.
