This article describes an innovative programme in leadership skills provided in the final year of postgraduate medical training.

The programme found that a tailored, non-didactic leadership programme, coupled with leadership coaching, was critical to improving clarity of goals, self-management, self-perception, self-confidence, preparedness for leadership and NHS knowledge for Specialist Registrars, who have gone on to gain hospital posts.
