Coombe End Court care home in Wiltshire has created a ‘time warp’ room that contains features from the 1950s to help aid the memories of Alzheimer’s patients.
The room, which contains classic items such as a gramophone, a wireless and a typewriter was set up to calm residents by helping them to reminisce about their life history. The home’s staff say the room has led to a reduction in the use of anti-psychotic drugs.
Claire Walters, a manager at the home, said:
“Years ago if somebody was distressed in the night, you’d give them a tablet but now we bring them into these rooms and we talk to them.
We go over their life history and within an hour they’re completely calm and happy.”
Combe End Court care home, is run by the Orders of St John Care Trust (www.osjct.co.uk). It caters for 60 residents of whom a third are suffering from severe dementia.
